I had no idea The Who still exist until they appeared at the halftime show for the Super Bowl. I realize some original members have died but, nevertheless, seeing the show blasted me home to Memory Lane. I saw The Who in Philadelphia at the Spectrum Arena, probably about 1970 or so. Pete Townsend smashed his guitar, they played all of “Tommy”, I was with great friends and it was just a truly remarkable, astounding first rock concert for me. It was strange hearing people say The Who was “too old” to do the Super Bowl – what a classic, innovative band they were in their hey day, and understanding their impact is major to understanding music today.

Reservations

- Image via Wikipedia
I have become very passionate about Habitat for Humanity and I am also involved with outreach to Native American reservations. Habitat for Humanity has affiliates that work on some of the reservations, and I would love to go on a building trip with one of these affiliates. Trips are often available, for instance, in New Mexico and South Dakota. We say that “Habitat is not a hand out, it’s a hand up” and I would like to be part of building decent, affordable housing on a reservation. I would also like to appreciate these people – their heritage and their present needs – more fully.
The Millennium Dome
One of the ways Great Britain celebrated the new millennium was a fantastic, experiential and interactive group of displays under its Millennium Dome out in Greenwich. Spending a day there was like really coming to terms with the meaning of being human, right now, right here. The planners chose about a dozen aspects of being human and designed areas representing those aspects: some of them were language, transportation, the body, and religion. I forget the name of one of the aspects but it was the most relaxing, meditative place I have ever been. You entered through a cave or igloo like entranceway and chose whether to go right or left. Inside was a sculpted space that was all white and you could sit, lie down, whatever you wished. The temperature was a bit cool, there was a randomized light display, as well as randomized musical notes that had begun at mid-night, New Year’s Day. There was also an area where you could have an avatar of yourself completed and then see yourself “in” a film clip – I was Elliot flying with E. T. on the bicycle.
Scooping Poop
I love doing barn chores, I love tools, and I need exercise. At long last, I have found another reasonably local farm that can use me a few mornings a week. It doesn’t pay, but even the 45 minute drive and the gas is easier on my wallet than a fitness center would be. Most days I muck some stalls – scooping horse pee and urine is actually a little harder and more artful than it sounds and it is good exercise. Then there are all kinds of different things to do, like working on electric fencing, helping prepare building materials and various other farm chores. There are seven little dogs who greet me when I drive in and lots of new people who are completely unassociated with my work or other relationships. I love it!

The Beginnings of My Passion
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about baseball. My father raised me listening to games on the radio and watching them on TV, educated me about statistics and facts and baseball history, and taught me everything about it that I know today. Having said all of this, it’s probably no surprised to hear that when he took me to my first major league game, it was one of the best days of my life. We had excellent tickets, the weather was beautiful and I even caught a ball hit by Derek Jeter! I was only 13 and since then I’ve been to several more games, but none will ever be as special as my first.

The Life I Imagined He Had
I once read the book entitled “The Life You Imagine” by Derek Jeter, who happens to be my favorite athlete of all time. The book outlines his life and what he had to go through and accomplish to get into the major leagues and play as the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees today. It was a personal account into the life of the man I respect the most aside from my friends and relatives, so this was a treat. He was honest and sincere and did not brag about what he achieved, rather took a more humble approach to his writing, and I love that.
Carb-o-holic and Sweet Tooth Monster

I am a carboholic. Anything that has bread, pasta or starch in it is delicious to me. My mother makes delicious pasta with sauce, and my favorite dish she makes is lasagna. When I’m at school, I like to get sandwiches with French fries, wraps, salad and burgers, and occasionally I will get pasta, but I don’t eat the sauce at school because it’s not very good. For dessert, I will eat just about anything chocolate. My favorite kind of candy is Reese’s, and often I have a craving for peanut butter cookies, as well as ice cream! I’ve got quite the sweet tooth.
A Day In The Life of Me
either wake up at 9:00 or 7:00. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays I go to 2 classes and get out at 4:20pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to class at 8am and get out at 12:35pm. Somewhere in between classes I get lunch in the student center and exchange texts with my friends. After class, I usually go back to my dorm, shower, try to get homework done, and then go out to dinner with my friends. 4 times out of 5 I will call my parents just to say hi and check up, because I live away at school and I don’t see them as often.
